Well, they didn't make it to Florida by Thanksgiving, but almost. At 8:45 on the glorious morning of Friday, November 23, five whooping crane chicks from the Class of 2012 flew over a crowd of 100s of craniacs. Shortly thereafter, the cranes landed safely on St. Mark Refuge where they will spent their winter soaking up the Florida sun. When the chicks took off two months earlier, the class numbered six, but chick #10-12 suffered a fatal injury during a rough landing in October. However, all those folks watching on Friday morning swear to have counted six chicks flying over instead of five. Was it a trick on the sunlight in the early morning? Or was the spirit of #10-12 flying along with her classmates on this special day?
